Design Project: Living Room
The Space: A living room with a vaulted ceiling, open to stairway and entry.
Design Challenge: Create a space formal enough for entertaining but comfortable for family to gather for conversation and media viewing on a regular basis.
Solution: The bold wall colors that came with the family's new house was eliminated in favor of a sophisticated warm gray, accented with a muted, midnight blue. The furniture plan offers function and flexibility, starting with an oversize navy sofa to maximize seating. A modern, upholstered wing chair can turn to face the conversation area or the media area, and the upholstered gray bench does double duty as a coffee table or as additional seating when company comes. Vertically striped drapery panels add balance to the ceiling height at the low end of the room, and a tall metal and reclaimed wood open bookcase helps fill the volume of the soaring ceiling while providing a place to display meaningful collectibles. A short angled wall makes a striking impression at the entry with a deep blue wall finish. An architectural salvage console, oversize wall art, and large scale accessories complete the composition. A new banded metal chandelier at the entry compliments the sophisticated rustic appeal of the room.

Design Project: Master Bedroom
The Space: A large master bedroom with a vaulted ceiling, open to an en-suite bath.
Design Challenge: Create a casual and comfortable bedroom with a coastal feeling using white, aqua and teal; include a reading retreat and provide media viewing from sleeping and retreat areas.
Solution: The new homeowners had just painted the walls a refreshing aqua color, with two striking deep teal accent walls. White painted furniture with casual lines provides crisp contrast to the vibrant wall color. The very long bed wall is anchored by a tall, tufted headboard upholstered in white linen, and the bed is dressed in white matelasse and accent pillows that support the color scheme. Two matching double-wide cabinets flank the bed, each with a tall framed mirror and matching lamp helping to balance the volume of the high ceiling. The side wall features a large framed painting of a wave that is both restful and active. The front wall is clad in horizontal wood siding painted teal, lending support to the casual coastal feel of the room. A white media cabinet, tv, and a wall hung bookshelf provide storage and interest to the wall. A small bumped-out area with windows sets the stage for a reading retreat for the lady of the house. Surrounded with textured white drapery panels, a contemporary wing chair and ottoman in a vibrant suzani pattern provides comfortable seating, supported by a reading lamp and side table.
