Design Project: Living Room
The Space: A large combination living room/dining room with an offset cathedral ceiling, open to a large entry and a curving staircase.
Design Challenge: Create a sophisticated living/dining space that reflects the owners' love of California's Wine Country. With their children grown and gone, owners of this 25 year-old house wanted their home to reflect a contemporary, more affluent lifestyle that functions for them and their guests.
Solution: Faux columns of fieldstone connected by rough-hewn timber with inset lighting is used to delineate the living room area and balance the off-center cathedral ceiling in this open concept space. The wall between columns is painted a deep, muted blue and features a large landscape painting framed in reclaimed wood. A weathered wood console below provides storage and display space. The seating area is made up of two identical large scale, modern sofas in a textural cream-colored fabric with nailhead detail, and a banded metal drum table with a glass top that sits between them. The balance of the room is painted in a lighter muted blue with all trim and moldings painted in a crisp white. The intimate dining area is backed by three oversized, framed mirrors placed horizontally one above the other. A contemporary wood and glass dining table is paired with lavish high-backed wing dining chairs upholstered in a geometric print. The metal sphere chandelier references wine barrel bands and provides functional lighting while helping to fill the massive volume of the high ceiling in this area. Two matching botanical print wool rugs unite the two areas. The resulting space is cool and sophisticated comfort for living the good life.
